The latest studies show that nineout of 10 LGBT youth report being bullied. No wonder they are four times more likely to commit or attempt suicide than their straight counterparts. When it comes to the bullying some say it is just kids being kids, when in fact youth mimic what they see adults doing.
When groups like Hawaii Family Forum spends hundreds of thousands of dollars to vilify the LGBT community, they need to take responsibility for these bullies. They helped create them, when they say things like LGBT couples do not make fit parents or we are not “real” families or our mere existence is an abomination.
That's from Honolulu Weekly's "No bull." And with all that's going on, why do people feel it's okay to use the t-word?
I get it. I get that straight people -- even well meaning ones -- often have no clue. But every time that words used and a cheap laugh takes place, you better believe some of the laughter's coming from ha-ha-it's-funny-because-it's-gay.
So if you want to help the young gay teens, if you want to help the community period, stop engaging in the the use of that term.
It's not difficult.
Now I am most appalled by members of my own community (LGBT, not African-American) who use the term. It's not cute, it's not funny.
I've had it with all the popularization of homophobia coming from the left. Leave that crap to the right. We are supposed to be better than that, we're supposed to want a better world.
But instead your little 'jokes' are fostering an environment that is very harmful.
It's not funny.
If you think it's funny, you're missing the point.
As a Black woman, I grew up when some Whites still felt they could tell Black 'jokes' around African-Americans and that it was our duty to be good sports and laugh at these 'jokes.'
I didn't play that game.
And I'm not going to play with regards to homophobic 'jokes.'
It is not appropriate. It is harmful and it needs to stop.
Those who continue to use those terms are hurting people. Now if you're a right-winger, fine and dandy. I don't expect a lot from you. But if you're on the left? I really didn't expect to suffer your homophobia on top of everything else we have to go through in this world.
We all get it. You don't like the Tea Party. You hate them. You need to insult them. The easiest way you can think of is to compare them to gay people. You know what David Lindorff and David Swanson and the rest of you? I realize that you need to lash out and that lashing out at gay people is just collateral damage, right?
You ought to be ashamed of yourselves.
