Don't read any further if you plan to watch last week's episode (cliffhanger episode until next year).
So Layla is an alien or part alien? I kind of thought we were going to see that. I also thought that was going to be what was going on with the president's wife. She just struck me as strange in the first episode and in the only other episode I've seen her in since. ("Strange" meaning she acted less afraid and more like someone who was in on something.)
I think there are a few aliens on the show (or half-aliens) who are either pretending otherwise or don't know yet that they're half-alien. And Layla's mother was my guess for the alien there, not Layla.
The first episode never made sense in terms of Layla's mother.
Do you remember how they grabbed Layla's little sister? Layla and John Ritter's son were on a cruise. They call her father. He's on the phone with Layla. Her mother's setting the table or fixing dinner or something. And it's raining. And she sends her little girl (Layla's sister) out in the pouring rain to get her bike?
My parents wouldn't have done that. I would have been told, "It's about to rain, go put your bike up." But once it started raining? I wouldn't have been allowed to go and move it, I'd be told it was too late. Who sends their little girl (what is she, five, six?) out in the pouring rain without even an umbrella or rain jacket?
So I always thought the mother was going to be in on and not dead. And an alien.
So I was wrong there.
If I were the alien -- Hold on. I need to look up names.
Okay, it's Leila and not Layla. But I need Isobel's name. Isobel is an alien. She's Thomas' girlfriend and if I were Isobel, I'd kill Thomas. I'm not joking.
Okay, the 2nd to last episode was where Isobel and Thomas plotted to kill Sophia who is both queen of the aliens and Thomas' mother. And they were going to double cross her as well. But Sophia caught on. She confronted Isobel and Isobel knew she was in trouble. Sophia gave her a choice: (1) take this gun and shoot yourself in the knee or (b) leave the aliens and never have any contact with them again.
Isobel couldn't leave her own or at least she couldn't leave Thomas. So she shot herself in the knee.
The next episode, the very next one, Thomas tells her that they're splitting and they do. Uh, why couldn't they have split before Isobel had to shoot herself in the knee. I'd be pissed if I were Isobel.
The way I'm understanding the aliens, they're kind of like the characters Goldie Hawn and Meryl Streep play in Death Becomes Her: They live forever. Or at least for a long, long time. Leila's father, for example, is revealed as an alien when she finds photos of him going back to the 1940s (when the aliens first landed) and he's the same age in every picture.
It was interesting.
