"book 'em friday" and "How To Be A Movie Star"; "book 'em friday," and "How To Be A Movie Star II"
Elizabeth is by J. Randy Taraborrelli. Once upon a time, he was a really good writer of celebrity bios. He did a great one, for example, on Cher. He also did Call Her Miss Ross about Diana. That was a bitchy little book.
But it was full of life.
Elizabeth is dead on arrival.
Call Her Miss Ross came out in the early 90s. He updated it not long ago and, when he did, he couldn't understand why Diana's later works were treated so poorly. Apparently he was hoping we'd forget how he trashed her RCA work and her return to Motown.
I love Diana.
But I could respect his 90s slam on Diana -- and the whole book was a slam on Diana. That was his opinion. No problem.
But then he does an update (about 5 years ago) and the whole book goes limp. He's no longer bitchy. He's just boring.
If he were still bitchy, he might be able to make the book work. It wouldn't be nice about Elizabeth Taylor, but it would have life to it. Instead it's just one long yawn.
The book's in paperback and it's $7.99.
